F. Mouchet', C. Véra', P. Brémond' and A. Théron' 'Antenne ORSTOM, CERMESIOCCGE, B.P. 10887, Niamey, Niger; 'Laboratoire de Biologie Animale, UA C N R S 698, Centre de Biologie et d'Ecologie Tropicale et Méditma&enne, Université Avenue de Villeneuve, 66025 Perpignan Cedex, France that B. s&egalensis was marginally compatible with S. curassuni. Malacological surveys during September and October have revealed that B. senegalensis occurs very frequently in temporary ponds throughout Niger (F. Mouchet, personal communication). To our knowledge, no malacological survey has been done in the eastern part of the country during the favourable season for the development of B. umbilicatus. From studies conducted in the western zone by CERMES and INRAN, it appears that, even though it has been reported in the two localities, B. umbilicatus is rare. Further studies are planed to determine the major biological and epidemiological features of S. curassuni in Niger in order to assess its genetic relationships with S. curassoni from Senegal and with S. haematobium and S. bovis from Niger.

Pattern of cercarial emergence of Schistosoma curassoni from Niger and comparison with three sympatric species of schistosomes.
The emergence pattern of Schistosoma curassoni cercariae from Bulinus umbilicatus, whose adult worms parasitize bovine, caprine, and ovine ungulates in Niger, is of a circadian type with a mean emission time at 0855 hr +/- 1 hr 6 min, characteristic of the schistosome species parasitizing domestic or wild cattle. The comparison of this cercarial emergence pattern with those of the other 3 sympa...

The transmission in West Africa of Schisto&&a haematobium by Bulinus truncatus and B. globosus is well known (BROWN, 1980). On the contrary, B. senegalensis, widely distributed in the sub-desert and sahelian zone and associated principally with a temporary environment (BETTERTON et al., 1983), has been found naturally infected in Senegal and The Gambia only (VERCRUYSSE et al., 1985). In Niger, ...

متن کاملIntrogressive Hybridization of Schistosoma haematobium Group Species in Senegal: Species Barrier Break Down between Ruminant and Human Schistosomes
BACKGROUND Schistosomes are dioecious parasitic flatworms, which live in the vasculature of their mammalian definitive hosts. They are the causative agent of schistosomiasis, a disease of considerable medical and veterinary importance in tropical and subtropical regions. Schistosomes undergo a sexual reproductive stage within their mammalian host enabling interactions between different species,...
